Ethel Wood, 83, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, November 28, 2010, at home. Born on March 29, 1927 in Portsmouth, she was a daughter of the late, Elvin and Ruby Eggers Messer. Ethel was retired from the Hart’s Department Store and a member of the Eastern Star and the Daughter’s of the American Revolution. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wood, a son, Ronnie, a daughter, Marsha McCulloch, three brothers, Estel, Ralph, and Norman Messer, one sister, Florine Jackson and a great granddaughter, Amanda Rodgers. Surviving are one son, Joe (Dori Lou) Wood of South Shore, KY, Vicky (Maurice) Brandel of Melbourne, FL, Donna Gooch of Friendship, and Sharyn (Dennis) Glynn of Wheelersburg, one sister, Irene Maple of Portsmouth, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one son-in-law, Larry McCulloch. A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Brant Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Maurice Brandel officiating. Interment will be in Rushtown Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Brant’s in Portsmouth from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the SOMC Hospice.
