Gary Lee Buchanan, 63, passed away on April 13, 2011 in Palmdale, CA. Born on September 4, 1947 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he was the son of the late James C. and Pearl McClurg Buchanan. Gary grew up in Portsmouth and attended Ohio University, Wright State University and received his degree from the University of San Francisco. He served in the United States Air Force with over 20 years of service and retired as a Master Sergeant. While in the USAF, Gary taught mathematics, worked on the Trident Missile Project, and played in the Drum and Bugle Corp at each of his assigned bases. After his military retirement, he joined the staff of Northup Grumman as a consultant, where he worked up to the time of his death. Gary is survived by his wife, Beth, his loving children: Kimberley Buchanan, Michael (Sarah) Benedetto, and Matthew (Tristin) Buchanan, and four beautiful grandchildren: Yamilex, Alora, Kaylei and Tyler, four sisters: Kathy (Doug) Arnett, Connie (Tom) Swavel, Jayma (Mark) Shuter, and Tammy (Lou) Scott. Four aunts, several nephews and nieces and their children and many cousins also survive him. A graveside service will be held 9:30 a.m.at the Memorial Burial Park on Saturday, August 27, 2011, with Pastor John Gowdy officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the United States Air Force from Wright-Patterson AFB. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brant Funeral Service in Portsmouth.
