Gerald “Jerry” Lloyd Newkirk, 87, of Wheelersburg, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 13, 2012, at his residence. He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on August 23, 1924, to Joseph Roy and Margaret Mae Craden Newkirk. Jerry served as a Staff Sergeant in the Army during WWII and participated in the D-day invasion. He received a Purple Heart presented personally from General George Patton.
Jerry retired as general foreman from the Portsmouth Division of Dayton Walther Corporation in 1977. He was a past member of the Portsmouth Motorcycle Club and had toured all over the United States on his Gold Wing Motorcycle. He was a Christian and attended Christ Brethren Church in Rubyville.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Nancy Bowling Newkirk; two sons, Jerry “Mick” (Barbara) of Dublin and John (Rita) of Rubyville; two daughters, Joette (Steve) Uhl of Florida and Sherri (Gerald) Norris of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Christopher (Paige) Newkirk of California, Jarrod Newkirk of Rubyville and Jeri Norris of Portsmouth; two great-grandchildren Kolaiah and Desi Newkirk of California; three step-children, Kent (Karen) Bowling, Barbara (Rick) Mains, and Keith (Stephanie) Bowling all of Portsmouth; step-grandchildren, Shane (Tashana) Bowling, Shannon (Keri) Bowling, Brandon Morgan, Bria Morgan, and Candi, Carman, Sarah and Joel Bowling all of Portsmouth; and eight step great-grandchildren, Davis, Trinity, Eli, Carson, Kennedy, Madison, Reagan Bowling, and Alia Morgan all of Portsmouth.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 61 years, Joyce “Dot” Sloas Newkirk on December 11, 2006, and sister, Violet Greene.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE with Pastor Robert Davis officiating. The family will receive friends at Brant’s in Sciotoville on Friday from 5 - 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park with military honors by the James Dickey Post of the American Legion.
