Helen C. Mowery, 91, of Sciotoville, died Monday, December 8, 2014, at Hill View Health Care. Born on June 1, 1923 in Portsmouth, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Katherine Switalski and was employed at the former Marting’s Department Store. Helen was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church and the Portsmouth Monastery Club. As a teenager, she worked at the canteen at the railroad station serving coffee and doughnuts to troop trains going to war.
Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Dan, Jim, Bob and Raymond Switalski and two sisters, Sister Cecilia and Mary Frances Switalski.
Surviving are her husband, Bill Mowery, four sons, Joe (Della) Mowery of Wheelersburg, Pat (Teresa) Mowery of Tucson, Arizona, Jim (Kerry) Mowery of Wheelersburg and Tim (Lucinda) Mowery of Portsmouth; a daughter, Beth (Jim) Fucci of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren and a great-grandson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Monica Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Yokum as celebrant. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park.
The family will receive guests at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. A rosary service will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.
