James McCarty

February 14, 1977 — September 24, 2017

James Patrick McCarty, 40, of West Portsmouth, died Sunday, September 24, 2017, in I.C.U. at the Southern Ohio Medical Center.  Born on February 14, 1977 in Portsmouth, he was a son of Gayle and Mary Shepherd McCarty.

Preceding him in death were his father, Gayle McCarty and his stepfather, Stephen Goad.

Surviving him are his mother, Mary McCarty Goad of West Portsmouth; a sister, Angela (Ken) Kelly and their children, Mason, Luke and Will, all of Auburn, Alabama and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jim is leaving behind many beloved friends, who meant a great deal to him.  A graduate of Minford High School, he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Shawnee State University and was pursuing his Master’s degree in psychology from Ohio University.

Jim was a kind and good-hearted man and tried to gently guide and assist everyone with whom he interacted.  He did not believe in judging one another and always saw the good in everyone.  He enjoyed volunteering at various food pantries and soup kitchens.

Jim’s hopes and dreams included traveling to Europe again and caring for a family, including foster children in a country setting.

He was also interested in innovative means of transportation, environmentally friendly energy resources and healthy eating.  Everyone who knew Jim will recall him carrying his bag containing grapes and bananas, which he was happy to share.

Jim had just began attending Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene in Wheelersburg, where he enjoyed the pastor’s sermons, the music and the friendly welcome of the congregation.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 28th, at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE.  Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.  The family will receive guests at Brant’s after 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.

Jim will be missed more than he realized by those who knew and loved him.
