James R. Mullins, MD, 65, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at the SOMC Hospital of acute renal failure. Born November 4, 1946 in Magnolia, Arkansas, he was a son of the late Cennie and Mae Smith Mullins and was a practicing area physician. Dr. Mullins was a graduate of the University of California-Berkeley, received his doctor of medicine from the University of California San Francisco Medical Center and was a New York Life Medical Scholar. He was a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, Board Certified by the Board of General Medicine, an active member of the Ohio State Medical Association, past chief of staff of the Southern Ohio Medical Center and former medical director for the Counseling Center. Surviving are a daughter, Remi Mullins-Murphy of Tracy, CA, a daughter and son-in-law, Rebekah and Aaron Monroe of Powell, a sister, Felecia Harte of San Francisco, CA, three grandchildren, Grace, Gabriel and Aaron Murphy, and soon to be four grandchildren. Also preceding him in death was a brother, Dennis Mullins. A celebration of Dr. Mullins’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Redeemer Activities Center with Ralph Clay conducting the celebration. The family will receive friends an hour before the celebration. Memorial contributions may be made to the Counseling Center, 1634 11th St, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662.
