Wheelersburg

James Allen Porter, 66, of Wheelersburg, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Friday, May 19, 2023 in the SOMC Hospice Center surrounded by his family.  Born on October 9, 1956 in Portsmouth, he was son of the late Ellsworth and Joann Mahan Porter and was retired from the carpenter’s union Local 437.

Also preceding him in death were a brother, Daniel Ross Porter, and a nephew, David Porter, Jr.

Jim served in the U.S. Navy and was an accomplished carpenter by trade.  His excellent carpentry skills can be seen in many family members homes.  Jim’s adventures took him from Florida to California surviving the 1968 Tornado that struck Wheelersburg and the 1989 earthquake in California.  He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt, especially with family.

He loved to cook for family and friends, and made a mean pot of chili!!  Carrying on the tradition of a vegetable garden started by his father, he continued to plant vegetables and harvest them for his family.  Jim was an enthusiastic reader and on Saturdays in the fall, you could find him dressed in Scarlett and Grey, cheering on his Buckeyes.  He had a heart of gold and loved his family fiercely and selflessly.

Surviving are his daughters, Misty Dawn (Anthony) Combs of Portsmouth and Kenzie Porter of Wheelersburg; a grandson, Chase Conley, a granddaughter Jo Combs; siblings, John Porter of Berkeley CA, Bonnie (Bane) Sylvia of Wheelersburg, Ruth (Randy) Murphy of Wheelersburg, David (Loretta) Porter of Wheelersburg, Philip Porter of Wheelersburg, and Kevin (Arlene) Porter of Marysville; and a great host of nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23rd at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE with Ralph Clay officiating.  Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors of by the James Dickey Post 23 of the American Legion.
