John M. Akers, 74, of Piketon, formerly of Lawrence County where he was born and raised, died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. He was born May 1, 1937, a son of the late Milton and Fannie Jenkins Akers, and was a long standing member of the New Boston Church of God of Prophecy. Also preceding him in death was a son, Gregory Akers, five brothers and two sisters. John is survived by his wife, Betty Igo Akers, four sons, John Akers, Jr., Kenny Akers and Chris Akers, all of Piketon and Gary Akers of Lucasville; two daughters, Karen Chaffins of Bainbridge and Janet Akers of Piketon; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be 1:00 p.m. on Monday at the New Boston Church of God of Prophecy with Pastor Howard Pruitt and Rev. Lewis Maynard officiating. Interment will be in Caroline Cemetery in Russell, KY. The family will receive friends at the church after 11:00 a.m. on Monday. Arrangements are under the Brant Funeral Service in Portsmouth. John is already terribly missed by his loving family. Our lives will never be the same without him. We love him more than words can say and we miss you, husband, father and grandfather.
