John O. Etterling, 83, of Slocum Station, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 20, 2016. Born on May 19, 1933 in Portsmouth, he was a son of the late Fred and Clara Henning Etterling, was a machinist at the former Detroit Steel Corp. and retired from Wheelersburg Machine Shop.
John was a proud Air Force veteran of Korean War.
Also preceding him in death were his wife, Shirley Schomburg, two sons, Jason Etterling and Jeffrey Etterling, and a brother, Robert Etterling.
Surviving are three sons, John W. (Sandy) Etterling of Cleveland, Bruce (Pat) Etterling of Toledo and Mark (Cathy) Etterling of Cincinnati; a daughter, Susan (Eddie) Merry of Bidwell; a sister-in-law, Elinor Etterling of Raytown, Missouri; a grandson whom he raised, Christopher (Brittany) Etterling and additional grandchildren Steven Merry, Kevin Merry, Amanda Etterling, Milissa Etterling, Kristy Etterling-Nelson, Corey Etterling, Matthew Etterling, Jaime Etterling, April Raike and Ericka Goodman and nine great-grandchildren. John is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 27th, at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE with Rev. Blaine Etterling officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Burial Park with military honors by the James Dickey Post of the American Legion.
The family will receive guests at Brant’s from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday.
The American flags on the avenue will be flown in honor of our proud veteran, John Etterling.
