John Dudley Rollins, age 81, of Portsmouth, died Friday, December 9, 2011 at Southern Ohio Medical Center. John was born July 2, 1930 in Scioto County, to the late Marshall Jesse and Susan Hammonds Rollins. He was proceeded in death by 6 brothers; Ras Marshall, Jerry, Frank, Steven, Jimmy and Gary Rollins, one sister; Rose Delena Wallace and a daughter-in-law; Becky Wilson Rollins
He was a 26 year member of the Armed Forces, a well decorated and commendated veteran of both the Korean and Viet Nam conflicts, where he had received a Bronze Star Award. Upon his retirement from the military John obtained a Bachelors degree in Social Work from Shawnee State University and was employed at the Area Agency on Aging District 7 as an Ombudsman until his retirement in 1998.
John is survived by his wife, Betty Jeannette Porter Rollins, whom he married, Feb. 10, 1948, three sons; John D. Rollins, II of Wheelersburg, Mark (Stacey) Rollins of Wheelersburg and Jess Rollins of Sciotoville, daughter; Nancy Rollins of Sciotoville, brother; Phillip Rollins of Fort Myers, Fl, sister; Sharon (Larry) Atkins of Pittsburg, PA, two grandsons; Andrew Rollins of Wheelersburg, John D. Rollins III of West Portsmouth and three great grandchildren; Katelyn “Little Miss” , Breana and Dalton Rollins.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to SOMC Hospice Center. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brant Funeral Service in Sciotoville.
