Larry E. Hammond, 77, of Portsmouth, died Monday, April 15, 2024, in the emergency room at the Southern Ohio Medical Center. Born on April 29, 1946, in Portsmouth, he was a son of the late Charles Newton and Mary Frances Damron Hammond and formerly employed with the Carpenter’s Union #437.
Brother Larry was affiliated with the Church of God in Cleveland, TN, had attended Portsmouth Church of God, was pastor at the Washington Court House Church of God and Lucasville Church of God and attended High Praises Church of God. He was in the ministry for 23 years.
An avid sportsman, he loved his Portsmouth Trojan football team and his Ohio State Buckeyes.
Surviving are his wife, Sandy Shipley Hammond, a son, Chad (Robin) Hammond of Portsmouth, a daughter, Tonya (John) Sapp of Fayetteville, NC; eight grandchildren, Morgan Wisener, Jonathan (Abby) Royster, Wil Hammond, Beau Hammond, Haidyn Griffith, Chase (Brittany) Sapp, Courtney (Arles) Scott and Kristie Hemming and fifteen great-grandchildren, Charlie, Raven, Addy, Rowan, Logan, Grayson, Emelia, Caden, Hunter, Dylan, Madison, Cash, Ryder James, Milly Maye and Matlyn Belle.
A Celebration of Larry’s Life will be held at noon on Saturday, April 20th, at Lucasville Church of God, 504 Morris Lane-Blue Run Road, Lucasville, Ohio 45648 with Vivian Wood officiating. Burial to follow in Scioto Burial Park.
The family will receive guests at the church from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday and after 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
