Mary Alice Grashel, 83, of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at the Southern Ohio Medical Center. Born on August 25, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Agnes Turner Grashel. Mary Alice was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and formerly employed by Dr. William Skaggs and as a secretary at The Ohio State University. Surviving are her sister, Norma (Walt) Roe of Portsmouth, a sister-in-law, Judy Grashel of Sciotoville, her nieces and nephews, Kenneth Roe, Patty (Ralph) Arrick, James (Dawn) Roe, Cathy Grashel, and Mark (Angie) Grashel, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and David Grashel, a nephew, David Shawn Grashel, and her special companion, Jewell Birdwell. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the Brant Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Pastor Ryan Brown officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Brant’s in Portsmouth from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church.
