Mary “Joan” Lowe, 75, of Portsmouth, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2010 after a long illness. Born January 20, 1935 in Sciotoville, she was a daughter of the late Bryan and Hazel Adams Hafer. A 1952 graduate of Minford High School, she was active as a cheerleader, majorette and enjoyed participating in chorus. Throughout her lifetime, she was an avid seamstress, enjoyed swimming, gardening and taking care of her family. Preceding her in death was her husband of 55 years, Eugene “Gene” Lowe, who died in 2002, brothers John Hafer of Salem, Oregon and Roy Hafer of Lucasville, a sister, Daisy Flanigan of Sciotoville and a grandson, Bryan Lowe of Wheelersburg. Surviving are 3 sons, Jay Lowe of Ashland, KY, Steve Lowe of Marion and Tim (Pui) Lowe of Chang Mai, Thailand; 2 daughters, Cindy (Paul) Downey of Portsmouth and Kim (Craig) Terry of Houston, TX; 8 grandchildren, Vanessa & Cassie Downey of Portsmouth, Jeffrey Lowe of Columbus, Jayme Lowe of Ironton, Meagan Will of Ashland, KY, Tyler and Shannon Lacy of Houston, TX and Kwan Lowe of Chang Mai, Thailand; and 7 great-grandchildren, Hayleigh Downey, Raymond Takahashi, Olivia Hightower and Mylee “Jo” Gleim, all of Portsmouth, Briana Lowe of Ironton, and Isaiah and Laney Will of Ashland, KY. Joan also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, as well as her loving dog “Josie”. A memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Brant Funeral Home in Portsmouth. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at Brant’s in Portsmouth one hour prior to the service.
