Rev. William Earl “Shady” Mays, Jr., 56, of Sciotoville, died Monday, April 18, 2011, suddenly at home. Born February 21, 1955 in Ironton, he was a son of Betty Jo Moore Mays and the late Rev. William Earl Mays, Sr. and was the pastor of Hanging Rock Church of the Nazarene. Shady was nearing completion of a degree in ministerial studies from the Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs, Col and had recently received the DeLong Series award for excellence of preaching from the Nazarene Bible College in recognition of his academic work. He was also working in a master gardening class and was a former chaplain for Southern Ohio Medical Center. Surviving are his wife, Patti McKenzie Mays, his childhood sweetheart, his mother, Betty Jo Mays of Minford, sons Rick and Matthew Litteral, both of Ashland, KY, a daughter, Amy Beth in Indiana; a grandson whom he was raising, Ellis Litteral and four additional grandchildren. Also surviving are 3 brothers, Ronald Mays of Vanceburg, KY, David Mays of Portsmouth and Jonathan Mays of Frankfort, KY; a sister, Diane Dodds of Minford, and many loving nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Hanging Rock Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Tim Throckmorton and Dr. Trever Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brant Funeral Service in Sciotoville.
